Would you like to participate in a brief perception experiment and have the chance to win an Amazon voucher?

Hi, I am a visiting PhD student at the University of Leiden and I'm running a perception experiment on foreign-accented English, where participants are asked to listen and judge digitally manipulated sentences produced by native and nonnative speakers of English.

The test can also be taken online and it takes 25 to 30 minutes to be completed. The participation will be rewarded with a prize draw: on December 1st the name of three participants will be drawn and they will be awarded a £20 Amazon Voucher for their participation.

UNIQUE SINTERKLAAS CELEBRATION

Only a few weeks to go before Sinterklaas makes his way to Leiden. On Saturday 24 November, Sinterklaas’s arrival will be celebrated at the Beestenmarkt, after which he will settle in the “Huis van Sinterklaas” (House of Sinterklaas) in the Oude Waag. From Sunday 25 November, Sint will open his doors to thousands of kids and allow them to take a peek in every nook and cranny of his temporary home. Sinterklaas will also offer the opportunity to organize private parties at his home. The Expat Centre Leiden would like to invite you and your children to the “Huis van Sinterklaas” on the morning of Sunday 2 December.

Progamme:*
09.45 hrs. Arrival of children and parents
10.00 hrs. Dance workshop with “Zwarte Pieten”
10.15 hrs. Arrival of Sinterklaas, children’s dance performance
10.30 hrs. Sint hands out presents to children, Sint tells a story
10.40 hrs. *”Pieten programme”: children perform tasks to earn a Pietendiploma
-Guided tour of Sinterklaas’ chambers
-Colouring in pictures
-Make your own Pieten hat or Sinterklaas mitre
-Present trail
-Personal meeting with Sinterklaas
11.20 hrs. Departure of Sinterklaas / Sing-along “Dag Sinterklaasje”
11.30 hrs. Pietenhuis is closed

*Sinterklaas and his Zwarte Pieten speak English!

it is nice to know there is such a community that opens up to welcome warmly the international new comers!

In 8 lessons of 2 hours (once every 2 weeks) you learn the basics of Digital Photography. You will explore the possibilities of your camera and learn the principles of diaphragm, shutter, sharpness and depth and elementary designaspects like lighting en composition. This knowledge is important for an optimal use of the creative possibilities of photography. Every lesson ends with an assignment of which the result will be discussed at the beginning of the following class.
