Hello all, This is going to be confusing, another Nicole, also with 4 children (15, 12, 9 and 7). My husband and I are dutch but we've lived for 12 years all over the world and got our children, now we're back home in Leiden and we feel sometimes even more aliens then we did abroad. I do miss international friends who recognize the fun and hilarity when your out of your comfort zone, it makes people much more interesting. I love to join your network and hope to meet you soon.

Hello everyone,

Glad I found your web site, Harriet. It's a great resource..thank you lots!

My husband and I moved to Leiden a week ago (Roomburg area) with our 8.5 months baby boy. We're still settling in so it's somewhat stressful. We're trying to find an English-speaking, clean and friendly nursery/day care for our son. It will be our first experience with day care. I would certainly appreciate some encouragement and suggestions. Thanks!

So glad I found this website....
I am Nicole and on the brink of moving after a very happy 4 year period in Brussels to Leiden, with my family of four (12, 9, 6 and 8 months). Although I'm Dutch, and my husband too, we have become so very much attached to our international friends here in Brussels, with all their different backgrounds and open-mindedness, that we are so very sad to leave and become ordinary Dutchmen again. I would love to join your network, find new friends and make Leiden my home. We're completely new in the area (used to live near Haarlem), so that's a thing we share with regular expats.. Really looking forward to meeting you! Nicole

Hello All,
We have just moved back to Leiden and I require a babysitter as my previous one is no longer available (natuurlijk!).
Does anyone have a recommendation? It would be for 5hrs per week central Leiden.
Cheers!

Congratulations on an excellent website. May the section about special needs children spare other expats some of the pain I went through 5 years ago after moving to Leiden from the USA not knowing that my son had autism.

Hello everyone,
I will be moving to Leiden with my 4 year son (and one more on the way) at the end of June (my husband came over a month ago), and are looking forward to getting to know some people through this network - excellent site! My husband is currently looking into schools for our son, and I wondered if anyone has any experience with the Lucas van Leyden school (either location)?

Hello
We hope to be moving to Leiden within 2 weeks. We have 3 boys aged 12,15,17 and would love to make contact with other families with kids the same age. We are from new Zealand and have been in the Netherlands 2 weeks. This is a great website!!

Dear Harriet and other mums
My name is Ivana (an exYugo) and besides enjoying the multilingual multicultural community in Leiden, I'd love to share the news on CHILDREN'sTHEATRE (ages 3+) in Mare Speeltuin on 12 May 2010 (www.svmaredijk.nl) . Where can I send you the information about it for your website? Sorry, trying to make the guest book add free, but I don't see any other contact address. )). The performance is in Dutch, but has lots of mime, visual effects and music. One is at 11:00, the other at 14:00 (almost full already). At 14:00 there will be an interpreter in Nederlandse Gebaarentaal.

Hi Harriet and others,
What a beautiful website. Just read the stuff on multi-linguality (meertaligheid), and like to recommand a book for those who prefer to read (also) in Dutch on this subject: Hoe Kinderen Meertalig opgroeien. PlanPlan 2004. It takes examples from Dutch society, and is very positive. It has different suggestions adapted to different family situations. Living as a single Dutch parent in the UK, I thought it very useful. My kid of 8 is perfectly bilingual.
warm greetings,
Malika (Leicester)

Hi Harriet en others,

Great intiative! Nice site. Even for locals.
Some extra remark on Speeltuin Zuiderkwartier. It is in the open air. (small entrance fee of membershipcard) There is a supervisor, you can buy coffe, ice creams etc. First aid, toilet and baby room (for changing diapers) it is suitable for children 1-12 (even older) It is wonderful for both younger and older kids. The older ones can climb and play in a huge playing castle. There are even goats and rabbits. There is a small building / kantine to be rent for parties.

greetings,

Saskia
