To all international parents: the Municipality of Leiden and Leiden Expat Centre are happy to invite you to a free seminar on the Dutch education system.

During this seminar Annebet van Mameren from New2nl will explain all you need to know about the Dutch education system. She will discuss the level of Dutch education compared to other Western countries, the differences in educational philosophies (Montessori, Dalton, Waldorf, etc.), preschool, secondary school, international schools, after-school care, and much, much more!
The focus will be on the schools in Leiden and the surrounding towns.

Date: Monday 15th February 2016
Time: 8pm - 10pm. You are welcome from 7:30pm for coffee or tea
The venue will be a central location in Leiden
This event is offered to you free-of-charge by the Municipality of Leiden

Dear international families,

My name is Jiayi Ma, a master student studying integrated product design in faculty industrial design in TU Delft. I am doing my graduation project with a topic of "Design innovative toys balancing rebellion and conformism by using 3d printing techniques for children". Currently, I have come up with two concepts. My first concept is turning the 2D game “Find the difference” into 3D. Children are allowed to make and guess the difference on 3d printing toys individually or with others. The second concept is mainly about happiness extension of joyful feelings when children receive gifts. In this concept, children are given several toys day by day. These toys are able to consist a scenario such as the life in forest/universe/sea... Then children draw what they would like to have in this scenario and send picture to designers. They would receive a real model according to their drawings to complete their creation. Both of my ideas are not quite completed. Therefore, I would like to modify my concept by listening to children’s ideas on them. I need the help with children in 5-8 years old. I would give them several toys and ask questions during their play. I think the whole research process lasts about half an hour.

I am not speaking Dutch, luckily, when I search on internet, I find this website. I think my research topic is interesting and fun for both children and parents. It really make contribution to children's well-being for the society. If your family is kindly to participate in this research and has children in 5-8 years old or know who is suitable for my project, please contact me. I will bring some 3d printing gifts for the participants. Thanks so much. It would give me so much support.

My name is Eirini Velidaki, Im psychologist and Im doing my master's degree at Child and Adolescent Psychology in Leiden
This semester I have to attend a course in which I have collaborate with a school ro a family and work with children
between 4-8. That is to say, my task is to teach the children something they have difficulty with. This can vary from self help skills: going to the toilet; coat on or off; tying shoe laces;
motor skills.
social behaviour: waiting for your turn; playing nicely (sharing) with
other children;
listening to other children.
language: difficult words (prepositions, colour names, names for
numerals); playing with
speech sounds (rhyming).
"on task" behaviour: holding and working with a pencil; working with
scissors; social
games; remaining seated
appropriate work attitude (work longer at a task, work more attentively,
more neatly), basic
skills of reading and writing, elementary counting skills, and reducing
fear of failure.

This can be carry out between 21 st
of september till 20 january.
This is completely voluntarily and I have to do it within school hours or at home

My husband and i just moved to Leiden for my husband's new job. We are expecting our first child in June so until then, I will focus on learning Dutch and helping us get settled into our new life here. I am originally from California but have been living in Edinburgh, UK for the past 4 years. I would love to meet some new people so will keep my eyes peeled on this site for meet-up groups. we will be soon parents and as you can imagine we are starting looking around for arrangments during the time when we will be working. We leave in Stevenshof and we looked for the surrounding kinderopvang. Can anyone recommend any of those? We saw that another option is the "gastouder" system. Does anyone have experience with this other arrangment or can even give us any help?
It is not easy at all and any tip from more experienced parents is more than welcome

I have Health Blankets my parents bought in Tilburg, Holland about 1954. The family we stayed with worked for them. I can't spell their name correctly, probably; but their name was Versheren and am looking for their daughter Yvonne who worked for the US Government in Verdun, France. Is there anyway to go back and try to find Yvonne. Don't have their address; just pictures of their home in Tilburg. Have such fond memories of Holland and still use my blankets all the time. Thanks for this amazingly useful website. I plan to move to Leiden from the US with my wife and kids (2 sons). So living in Leiden will be quite challenging to all of us. Housing and school are the two major issues. I just got to know this website and am reading a lot of useful information. School information is very detail and informative. But I am wondering how the social housing system in Leiden works. I contacted Leiden Expat center and got information of few website of social housing. Although I contacted them, I haven't got any response. Does anyone here know some detail information of social housing around Leiden?
